Central Asia (by Khalid Orakzai) today, a significant step toward regional cooperation was taken by five Central Asian countries — Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan have agreed on how to share water from the Syr Darya and Amu Darya rivers during the 2025 growing season (April–October). However, many have asked questions that Afghanistan is also a key player in Amu Darya but ingrored in these talks.
some of the Key figures from the agreements is as follow,
Syr Darya River (Total: 11.9 bcm):
* Uzbekistan: 8.8 bcm
* Tajikistan: 1.9 bcm
* Kazakhstan: 909 mcm
* Kyrgyzstan: 270 mcm
Amu Darya River (Total: ~40 bcm):
* Uzbekistan: 16 bcm
* Turkmenistan: 15.5 bcm
* Tajikistan: 7 bcm
Environmental flow to the Aral Sea and delta: 2.1 bcm
These water-sharing agreements, coordinated by the Interstate Water Management Commission, are not just technical documents — they are a lifeline for agriculture, environmental balance, and regional peace.
in the mean while, two south asian countries Pakistan and India is also heading towards a war and water sharing is a significant topic. i hope south asia can learn much from the central asia on the Water sharing formula.
